TREASURY CHAMBERS,
10 January 1893
I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Bramston's letter of the 8th July and Mr Fairfield's letters of the 27th September and 21st December last, respecting the Hong Kong subsidiary silver coinage, and I am to request that you will convey to the Marquess of Ripon Their Lordships' regret that the two first mentioned letters should have been inadvertently allowed to remain so long unanswered.
With regard to Mr Bramston's letter I am now to enclose, for His Lordship's information, a copy of the Deputy Master of the Mint's report upon the results of the assay of the coins of the Canton Mint which were enclosed in that letter.
With regard to Mr Fairfield's letters, I am to state that the necessary arrangements were made by the Deputy Master of the Mint for the further supply to the Hong Kong Government of $500,000 worth of Subsidiary coins for the past year (1892), and that he is taking the requisite steps to meet the demand of the Colonial Government for $700,000 worth during the present year.
I am,
The Under Secretary of State
Colonial Office,
sir,
Your obedient servant
Sumelly
